And a few words about our town...
Rethymno
is one of the four bigger towns on the island of Crete, located in
the middle of the northern coastline of Crete. Its population is
about 50.000 people. The University of Crete is in Rethymno and its
campus inlcudes Schools such as the School of philosophy, the School
of Education (Primary and Preschool) and the School of Social,
Economic and Political Sciences...and it has a great circular
building for a library. The people of Rethymno are mainly involved in
the tourism business. Rethymno has a beautiful old town with
architectural influences from the Venetian and Turkish occupation
years. From the top of Fortezza, the Venetian fortress, the visitor
can enjoy the view of the sea and the 15km long beach - one of the
longest beaches in Europe and home of the endangered species of
Caretta-Caretta sea turtle. Additionally, the visitor can visit many
picturesque villages near the town of Rethymno, where one can taste
the delicious Cretan food and wine.
